Madhu is a young and brilliant exponent of the Sitar in the Hindustani musical tradition. Born in Bangalore and brought up in Hyderabad, he was exposed to all that was best in Hindustani music since his infancy. Initiated into the art of Sitar playing by his father Sri Nanduri Partha Sarathi, a well known writer, journalist and a connoisseur of music, at the early age of nine, he grew up to be a precocious young artiste in the ideal ambience of classical music at home, listening and absorbing the music of all-time greats like Abdul Karim Khan, Fayyaz Khan, Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Amir Khan, Bismillah Khan, Vilayat Khan and Ravi Shankar. At the age of ten, he was formally put under the tutelage of Pandit S.Shankar Rao of Hyderabad, who laid a firm foundation for his future as a Sitar artiste. After studying for over seven years, Madhu had further training from Pandit K. Atmaram Sharma of Hyderabad under whose guidance he earned his Bachelor’s degree with honors in Classical music (The Sitar).
Even while learning from those two masters, Madhu had been diligently following Ustad Vilayat Khan’s ‘Gayaki’ style of Sitar playing since his childhood. It was therefore a dream come true for him when the legendary Ustad accepted him as a disciple and trained him extensively for over seven years. Madhu’s training reached its zenith under the loving care of the Ustad and he blossomed into a fine artist in the true tradition of Vilayat-Khani Baaj.
Since his debut at the age of eleven, Madhu earned accolades from audiences on several occasions. He brought honors to his junior and later engineering colleges by winning many first prizes in inter-varsity competitions. Madhu was one of those talented few who were hand-picked by the Sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan to be a part of his orchestra that presented a grand program in front of the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi on the occasion of the National Youth Awards Presentation in the year 1990. Another program of the orchestra was aired several times on National Television Doordarshan.
After earning his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Osmania University, Madhu proceeded to the United States of America for higher studies. He earned his Master of Science and Doctoral degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Rhode Island between 1992-1997. He specializes in Abrasive Water Jet Technology and is now a professional Information Technology Expert working in New York, USA.
In spite of his rigorous academic and professional schedule, Madhu has performed all over Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Massachusetts and Washington D.C. He performed at some prestigious events such as First Night of Providence celebrations (1996) and First Night of New Jersey Millenium celebrations (2000) and Multinational Art festivals. He experimented with western music and has on many occasions performed with jazz and rock artists. In spring 1993, he was part of the Jazz combo that performed at the fine arts center, University of Rhode Island, where he improvised on Be-bop tunes and created a Jazz-Indian fusion number. His enterprise received a standing ovation. Over the years, Madhu has given many lecture-demonstrations on Indian music and Sitar.
On a short visit to India during January - February 2000, Madhu performed in a string of concerts at various places. He performed in a concert organized by the Andhra Pradesh Department of Culture in the prestigious Ravindra Bharati auditorium in Hyderabad on the occasion of the 50th (Golden Jubilee) celebration of the Indian Republic. In another concert, Madhu was felicitated by the Hon. B.N. Reddy (former Member of Parliament) in the presence of several music and literary stalwarts. Madhu's interviews were aired on All India Radio Vijayawada and Hyderabad. A special highlight of his visit to India was a 30 minute performance that was telecast on Indian National Television (Doordarshan).
During his recent visits to India, Madhu's Jugalbandis (Duets) with a leading Carnatic Classical Vocalist were particularly prominent and received wide acclaim. Madhu was also specially interviewed by some of the leading newspapers, radio and television channels.
Very recently, Madhu started working on a new project called Raaga Chitra, a unique presentation of North Indian music and paintings in which the audience is enveloped in a beautiful ambience of sound and vision.
